CCA sent a letter to Governor Hochul, signed by over 110 organizations, calling on her to nominate a Chief Judge who will stand up for the rights of New Yorkers.

While many of us have watched the U.S. Supreme Court in horror, New York’s highest court has also taken an alarmingly regressive turn, issuing decisions that have harmed incarcerated people, workers, immigrants, and tenants, curtailed New Yorkers’ rights, and undermined democratic institutions. But with the unexpected resignation of the Chief Judge this month, we have an opportunity to change the trajectory of the court.

As part of our broader judicial accountability work, we are demanding the Governor nominate a Chief Judge who will not stand in the way of efforts to defend the rights of incarcerated people, protect workers, fight discrimination, and advance justice in housing, healthcare, education, immigrants’ rights, disability policy, climate protection, and more.
